Call rates for satellite phones of security personnel in border slashed to Re.1

The satellite phone call charges for security personnel manning the international borders will be slashed from Rs 5 to Re 1 per minute from Thursday.

The reduced rates will be effective on satellite phone calls made from border outposts and will benefit personnel central paramilitary forces like the Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP), Border Security Force (BSF) and Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB).

“We felt this was the least we could do to boost their morale and mark our respect and appreciation towards our brave jawans,” said Union Minister of State for Communications and Information Technology Sachin Pilot, who took the decision after a visit to North Eastern states recently.

“The decision to reduce call charge comes in appreciation of the fact that the jawans of central paramilitary forces are protecting our international borders situated in most difficult and inhospitable terrain,” he added.

The only mode of civilian communication in many border areas is satellite phones provided by BSNL.
