BSNL introduces VDSL tech in India

Public sector telecom giant Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) has won the race becoming the first internet service provider to offer the fastest broadband speed in the country by servicing customers broadband connection speed up to 24 Mbps.

BSNL will now initiate with offering this high speed broadband service through the high speed digital subscriber loop (VDSL) technology.


However, the VDSL technology is revealed to be inferior compared to the fiber to the cabinet (FTTC) network technology or the DOCSIS3 technology, which are offers broadband speeds up to 200 Mbps.

The service can be availed by subscribers for a price of Rs. 4,999 a month for speeds up to 16 Mbps and Rs 9,999 a month for speeds of up to 24 Mbps.

BSNL reveals that only those customers can avail of 24 Mbps broadband speeds are those who lay within a 500-metre cable route distance from the exchange. While, 16 Mbps broadband speed is available to customers who are around 1km from the exchange, that too at far steeper rates.

In January 2009, BSNL said that it would invest around Rs 1,600 crore in infrastructure facilities to support eight million broadband connections.
