Govt to infuse Rs.150 billion in state run Bks
The cabinet approved infusion of 150 billion rupees ($3.4 bln) in state-run banks during the fiscal year ending March, 2011, to help meet growing credit requirements of the economy, a government statement said.
"The infusion of 150 billion rupees in Tier I capital instruments of PSBs would enable them to expand their credit growth by about 1.85 trillion rupees ($41.6 bln)," the statement said on Friday.
The cabinet also gave its approval for infusion of additional capital in the next financial year after considering the third quarter results of banks in 2010/11.
In February, Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee had made a provision of 165 billion rupees ($3.7 bln) in the annual budget for state-run banks to ensure that they are able to attain a minimum 8 per cent Tier-I capital by March 31, 2011.
India has signed two agreements with the World Bank for a loan of $3.2 billion to provide additional capital to state-run banks. Formalities for the first tranche of $2 billion have already been completed, it said.
The government expects an infusion of additional capital would also strengthen the Indian banking system, which remained largely unaffected during global financial crisis since September 2008.
India, Asia's third largest economy is expected to grow by around 8.5 percent in 2010/11 and 9 percent in the next financial year as per government estimates.

Sachin says retaining 8 players in a IPL team is important
Sachin Tendulkar, the Mumbai Indians captain, has said the IPL franchises should be allowed to hold on to a certain number of players from their existing squads as the league prepares for a reshuffle at the end of the 2010 season, when existing player contracts expire. Next year the IPL will have two new franchises - Pune and Kochi - and a fresh auction but Tendulkar wanted teams to be able to retain at least eight players.
"About retaining players, my personal thoughts are that we should be allowed to retain four India players and four foreign players," Tendulkar told the Indian news channel Times Now. "As for domestic players, it should be up to the franchisees. I feel it's a tough call because all teams have made huge efforts in building a good side.

Almost a month after Uttar Pradesh CM Mayawati's money garland row, the CBI has told the Supreme Court that it has evidence to prove that she and her relatives have illegal wealth.
The CBI, in an affidavit filed on Friday in a corruption case against her, said it has statements of witnesses to show that she virtually forcibly acquired gifts from people. Claiming that it was serious about prosecuting the chief minister and her relatives, the CBI said it has got clinching evidence to prove that they acquired wealth and built assets far exceeding their legal income.

Mobile Seized from Nalini's cell in Vellore Jail
In a development that could shatter Nalini Sriharan's claim to unblemished prison conduct for the past 19 years, Vellore jail authorities recovered a mobile phone from her possession and found that she had made calls to Canada and London.
Nalini's daughter Meghara is in London with her paternal uncle's family. She is said to be preparing to join a medical course this year. Hours after the jail authorities released information about the seizure from Nalini's cell, the Rajiv Gandhi assassination case convict's counsel, P Pugalenthi, circulated copies of a letter Nalini had written to the additional director-general of police (prisons) on April 6. The letter talks about harassment and torture at the hands of prison authorities, and says she never attempted to go against jail rules. Noting that she never attempted to bribe prison personnel to enjoy facilities not permitted legally, Nalini said she as well as her visitors were being subjected to humiliation and intimidation.

IPL in Controversy after Tharoor's Visit
Income tax officials digging into IPL papers have failed to locate two vital documents — the bid papers of the Videocon and Adani Groups, whose failure to win teams for Pune and Ahmedabad is said to be at the root of the Lalit Modi-Shashi Tharoor battle.
Sources in the government said I-T sleuths had searched high and low for the files related to these two failed bids but have found nothing. The Adani Group, a $5-billion Gujarat-based conglomerate, is headed by Gautam Adani, while Videocon, a $4-billion diversified group, is led by Venugopal Dhoot.

Mobile Operators may reduce the charges further

Last year, the offer of a pay-per-second plan by a new operator triggered off a price war, leading to charges of predatory pricing by some telecom operators. Around the same time, SMS costs are a fraction of a paise while consumers are charged between 50 paise to Rs 1.50 to send SMSes. Both these developments invited the attention of the regulator.

Developing Mumbai & the threats it faces
The government policies of developing Mumbai will only succeed in driving away local people and sons of the soil from the city, Eknath Khadse, the leader of opposition in the state assembly, said on Tuesday.
Khadse said that the policy of allotting free FSIs to builders had led to an enormous uncalculated growth of the city, which in turn had put pressure on the infrastructure. “If the city keeps growing at this frantic pace, soon there will be a day when residents will take to the streets demanding basic amenities like water and open space,” Khadse warned.

India's central Bk hikes key rates
M V Nair, CMD of government-owned Union Bank of India, said there was enough liquidity in the system to meet the credit demand. Yes Bank MD Rana Kapoor said as there is enough liquidity, interest rates are unlikely to firm up in the next couple of months since it is the lean business season, when credit growth generally remains sluggish.
The positive signal about the continuation of softer interest rate regime also emanated from the fact that RBI took relatively a softer stand on policy rates hike than was expected in its credit policy. With the inflation rate nearing 10%, the market was expecting RBI to raise the key rates by 0.50 percentage points. But, RBI raised both the repo rate — the rate at which RBI lends overnight funds to banks — by 25 basis points to 5.25% and reverse repo rate — the rate at which banks park their surplus funds with RBI — to 3.75%.
Besides this, RBI also increased the cash reserve ratio — the proportion of deposits that banks are required to keep with the central bank — by 25 basis points to 6%. This measure will lead to an evacuation of Rs 12,500 crore from the banking system. But this will not have much impact as the banking system has a surplus liquidity of over Rs 50,000 crore.
RBI governor D Subbarao said that the stance of monetary policy is intended to anchor inflationary expectations while being prepared to respond appropriately, swiftly and effectively to further build-up of inflationary pressures. The central bank has pegged the annual inflation based on whole sale price index for March 2011 at 5.5%.
The rate hike will gently tighten money supply and help moderate inflation — which is hovering close to 10%, FM Pranab Mukherjee said. He, however, felt that inflation has peaked and would begin falling and be lower than the 5.5% projected by RBI for this fiscal. “These policies should have a gentle impact in tightening money in the economy and should dampen further inflationary pressures,” he said.

People in India, the world's second most populous country, have more access to a mobile telephone than to a toilet, according to a new UN report.
"It is a tragic irony to think that in India, a country now wealthy enough that roughly half of the people own phones, about half cannot afford the basic necessity and dignity of a toilet," Zafar Adeel, director of United Nations University's Canada-based think-tank for water, the Institute for Water, Environment and Health, said.

Commodore's comprommise the nation for his affair ?????
In recent memory, never has a defence contract been revised thrice. But, Admiral Gorshkov deal has witnessed an unusual hike. Now, in a new twist, it appears a senior Indian naval officer could have done the damage.
Objectionable pictures of Commodore Sukhjinder Singh with a Russian woman have surfaced. This raises serious questions on whether Russia thrust the aircraft carrier deal upon us by luring him into a honey trap.
Court of inquiry is underway now against Commodore Singh. The objectionable pics of Commodore Singh surfaced a fortnight ago.
After this, the Navy chief has briefed Defence Minister A K Antony about the case.
Interestingly, Commodore Singh was uintil a few months ago, a favourite among the Naval top brass. He negotiated the Gorshkov deal - now called INS Vikramaditya.
Gorshkov saw unusual hike from Rs 4,870cr-Rs 11,650 cr. Singh was hand-picked in 2004 to look after Gorshkov refit. Commodore Singh was in Russia from 2005 to 2007.
Sources within the Navy have told, that if the Board of Inquiry finds Commodore Sukhjinder Singh guilty, he will have to face court martial. Sources also say even if he clears charges relating to the Gorshkov deal, he will be asked to leave as his conduct has shamed the Indian Navy. Commodore Singh could be served with a letter of displeasure.

No Govt or Private agency to monitor disposal of radioactive waste
Rules to govern medical waste largely ignore radioactive matter; agencies pass the buck
Before the radiation leak at a Mayapuri junk market stirred the authorities into action, the dangers posed by radioactive material seems to have been mostly ignored. While several hospitals use machines that include radioactive material — the substance found at Mayapuri is also suspected to have come from medical equipment — it finds no mention in the list of things state authorities on the ground level need to keep a tab on.
The Bio Medical Waste (Management and Handling) Rules, 1998, list out a number of hospital-generated waste, but the exhaustive rules do not include radioactive waste. While the Delhi Pollution Control Committee (DPCC) has a mandate for monitoring hazardous substances, it does not include radioactive waste or material either.

Apple's Venture in Ad market makes it easy for Google's AdMob acquisition
Google's CEO has been lauding iAd, saying that Apple's foray into mobile advertising demonstrates a competitive market in which Google should be allowed to acquire AdMob.
Google has been trying to buy AdMob since November, having snatched the company from Apple, but is facing resistance from the Federal Trade Commission who sees a potential monopoly. Apple's entry into the market removes that threat, at least according to Google CEO Eric Schmidt.

Apple iPad's manufacturing cost lies below $260
If you thought that Apple's 16 GB iPad at a price of $499 was value for money, then think again. The real price for manufacturing the iPad is around a half that price according to research agency iSuppli as we found out on Engadget. iSuppli dismantled the iPad and had a thorough look at what lies inside. According to their best estimates, the price of the materials used in the 16 GB iPad do not go a cent over $259.60. This includes $95 for screen and $26.80 for the A4 processor. The shiny aluminum exterior costs $32, while the battery costs $21. The only reason Apple is likely to quote for the huge price premium is the "research and development" cost. One thing that iSuppli did note was that the iPad was more complicated than it appeared as they found there were three chips controlling the touchscreen. iSuppli had previously researched the cost of the iPhone 3G and had come to a similar conclusion. So now you know the magic formula Apple uses to price its products.

Growth in Industrial production may encourage stimulus phase out
Industrial production growth slowed to 15.1 per cent year-on-year in February from 16.7 per cent in January. The slowdown was sharper than expected and was mainly attributable to slower growth in manufacturing and mining output.
India’s industrial production growth was 15.1 per cent year-on-year in February. Production growth has slowed since hitting a record-high 17.6 per cent in December. The Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation does not release seasonally adjusted data.
