2 militants killed in a gun battle in Kashmir.

Two separatist guerrillas of Jaish-e-Muhammad (JeM) outfit were killed after a daylong gunfight in south Kashmir's Pulwama district on Thursday, police said.

Security forces surrounded a house in Shangarpora village, 37 km from Srinagar, in Pulwama district this (Thursday) morning following specific information about presence of guerrillas inside, a senior police officer said here.

The militants were asked to surrender but instead opened fire at the security personnel, leading to the gunfight.

"The encounter is over. So far bodies of two local militants identified as Sajad Ahmad and Javed Ahmed Hajam were recovered from the debris. The searches are still on," a police officer said.

"Arms and ammunition have also been recovered from the encounter site," the officer said.

The house in which the guerrillas were holed up was destroyed during the encounter, police said.

This was the second gun battle in south Kashmir this week. Two guerrillas of the Hizbul Mujahideen outfit were killed Monday in a fierce gunfight with police and anti-insurgency Rashtriya Rifles (RR) troops in the Koimoh village of Kulgam district.

Security forces on Wednesday had gunned down two local guerrillas of the JeM outfit in north Kashmir's Baramulla district.
