DMK president and Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M Karuanidhi today urged that controversy surrounding the death of state CPI(M) leader W R Varadarajan should end, saying "maligning" him in his death would not be "politics of culture".
Referring to CPI state secretary D Pandian's remarks that Varadarajan's death should kindle a debate in CPI(M) over its functioning, Karunanidhi said this should "not be ignored".
"However, CPI(M) general secretary Prakash Karat has explained it (on the action initiated against Varadarajan over allegations of sexual harassment). Whatever it is, that party has lost Varadarajan and so have we," he said in the party mouthpiece 'Murasoli.'
Stretching the issue anymore would amount to maligning the departed soul and this was not "politics of culture", he said.
On Thursday, Karat had said that the party initiated action against Varadarajan on charges of sexual harassment and denied it had "hounded him to death".
The CPI(M) leader allegedly committed suicide after being stripped of all party posts.
