Mobile services provider Tata Teleservices (TTSL) today said it has added 2.98 million subscribers in January 2010 to become the number one operator in terms of subscriber addition for the sixth straight month, pipping rivals Bharti Airtel and Vodafone.
Bharti Airtel added 2.85 million new users, closely followed by Vodafone which added 2.7 new users, GSM operators' body COAI said in a release.
Commenting on the figures TTSL MD Anil Sardana said, "What makes this achievement especially momentous is that we have now led in new subscriber additions for six consecutive months, and have now emerged as the fifth-largest telecom operator in the industry, with over 60 million subscribers."
In the preceeding month also, TTSL had showed a healthy growth in new subscriber additions, adding 3.3 million new subscribers.
The company's GSM service DoCoMo brand coupled with its CDMA brand (Tata Indicom) pay-per-second billing system recently have catapulted the subscriber base of the company.
GSM operators together added 13.7 million new subscribers in January, taking the overall GSM subscriber base to 394.2 million.
